Britain is in talks with China over giving Beijing’s state-owned railway builder a role in constructing the troubled HS2 high-speed lix.
The China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) has said it can build the line in just five years at a much lower cost than is currently forecast, according to the Financial Times.
Shaun the sleep
If the Chinese can build a hospital in 10 days then we need to take the offer seriously. I can''t imagine any UK comtractor achieving that - it took my builders three weeks to fit a kitcher...
Can''t we get them to start on phase 2 and see who finishes first?
Provided someone else designs it,and a fortune is spent both in the UK,China and anywhere else production occurs, on intensive monitoring of quality control, what could possibly go wrong?
Can we ask them to fix Hammersmith bridge while they are over?
Boris is right now we are out of the EU we can bring furriners in from China to do the job cheaper. China can build a hospital in a week and the 40 new Boris hospitals will also be finished by the end of the year.
In 1825 the British built the first public railway. In 2020, they beg the Chinese to build one for them. Brexit Britain must be so proud. This must be exactly the kind of control they were dreaming of. "Believe in Britain" was their slogan. Heartbreakingly sad.
What’s so pathetic about all this, is that the Chinese bought rail lines and technology from Alstom (France), Siemens (Germany), Kawasaki (Japan), and Bombardier (Canada). They forced them into joint-venture setups, assimilated the technology and are now selling it abroad.
What Britain is saying is "thanks, Europe, for doing all the research, we’ll now be rewarding those who stole it from you." Classy. Why not e-mail all Rolls-Royce jet engine plans to Beijing, so the EU can buy these cheap in two years? It’s all pathetically fair game now, in the Tory post-principle era.
We lost our rail engineering resources somehow. Can’t think where they went, still looking. It’s a puzzle for sure...
Trump won’t be happy about this
Lived in China when they built the first high speed line from Beijing to Tianjin, about the same distance as from London to Portsmouth.
Really comfortable trains doing 350 KPH. Cost of a ticket even today on those trains is equal to about £8 each way. Won’t be that cheap in the UK.
It’s not an exclusive Chinese ability; building rail infrastructure. The French, Germans and Japanese are fully capable of building their own high speed rail connections at under half the price of the HS2, measured in price per km/mile rail constructed.
The Chinese have been building railways since the Wild West and unx Pacific... they’re bloody good at it.
It seems as a country we can’t build anything any more. 40 years of rightwing government has turned the country into a busted flush.
Ah so " Global Britain" actually means outsourcing everything to everybody but Europe ! Is this country incapable of building anything any more .
So basically a capitalist country is going to hire a state-owned enterprise from a self-proclaimed socialist state, because the state-owned enterprise can produce a superior end product at a better price.
If China was to tender to build a much better HSR at half the price, USA would put sanctions on UK if we accepted the Chinese tender.
Ironic that Chinese migrants built many of Americans first railways
And it’s the pathetic short term thinking of capitalism ,make a quick buck now for me , cut costs here , and don’t give a toss about the consequences or have actual investment in the future of the country and its people
